Single Stage PTFE Tefflux Membrane Filtration

ProFilco’s PTFE TEFFLUX MEMBRANE filter system is one of the most economical ways of single pass brine filtration. A sparkling clear brine is produced without the use of filter aids.

Costs are reduced by eliminating the use of cellulose for pre-coat and body feed, the clarifiers and the anthracite media filters.

After the de-chlorination process and re-saturation of the depleted brine, the raw brine is treated in one or more treatment tanks. The solids content of the brine depends on the quality of the salt and make up water. It can be as low as a few hundred ppm or as high as a couple of thousand ppm.

ProFilco PTFE Tefflux membrane type candle filters handle a wide range of solids, given that the Ca-to-Mg ratio is within acceptable limits. The precipitated calcium carbonate acts as a filter aid and prolongs the filter cycle.

Our PTFE Tefflux membranes can produce brine with an exceptionally low amount of suspended solids such as calcium, magnesium and other impurities in one single filtration step.

During filtration, suspended particles are separated from the brine and collected on the surface of the membranes. This causes pressure to increase across the filter. As soon as the maximum allowable differential pressure is reached, filtration is briefly interrupted to clean the PTFE Tefflux membranes.

A certain amount of filtrate is collected in the dome above the tube sheet. Low pressure compressed air is introduced at the top of the dome, driving the filtered brine into the candles in a reverse flow, slightly expanding the socks and removing the cake from the slick membrane surface.

This backwash cycle takes less than two minutes.

Some of the key benefits of the filtration cycle are:

  • Eliminates clarifiers and anthracite filters

  • No pre-coat or body feed required

  • Reduces waste disposal cost

  • Simplifies automation maximum brine clarity

  • Minimal operating & maintenance cost
